Interstellar:
The movie that made waiting for Star Wars possible.
It's finally here, the movie we've been waiting for. From the creators of Inception, one of the most creative and cool-looking movies ever to be put on screen, we have a space movie about worm holes! The story, when you hear it, sounds a bit forced. Crops are incapable of being grown, lots of dust storms, and Earth puts it's faith in a farmer who likes to build stuff and a joking robot. But it's much more then that. The first hour is a bit hard to get through. The whole time I was just saying, "Get to space, get to space, stop it Morse-Code-Speaking ghost, nobody cares." But then at the end of the movie, as all the pieces come together, you realize that the first hour makes the second hour so amazing! Without it, the characters would be dull and it would be hard to understand the sacrifice the mission took. The ending is nothing less of incredible, this includes the docking, the 5th dimension from the future, and the last few minutes when everything is wrapping up. We all love space movies, but there are so good ones, that if one was even just okay, it will be buried by Star Wars and Star Trek and never be seen again. But any movie that has a common genre, but thinks out of the box is what takes the cake. Interstellar did just that, it was a space movie that did what others did not have the guts to do, and makes you question what the new limits for movies are. Because this movie just smashed those limits to pieces. Now for character deconstruction:
I would feel like I would be leaving out a huge part of the film if I didn't mention our robot pal. TARS is awesome! Every space movie has to have a robot, but it is usually not shown with that much personality, even if it was programmed wrong. It gives the movie much needed comic relief at just the right parts. A small survey revealed many TARS fans, and many people thinking him as the best robot in movie history. I don't know about that, but he is still a great character.
Coop (Matthew McConaughey) did an amazing job. He has good humor, deep emotion, and has more dimensions than a wormhole! Now the actual character, Coop, is a farmer/engineer. He has two children, Murph (Mackenzie Foy) (Jessica Chastain) (Ellen Burstyn) (yeah, it's weird), and Tom. But I have to say, he seems to be the only one who cares about people on earth. Are the other people completely heartless? Anyways, he spends and hour/twenty freaking years on a planet with mountain-sized waves. He watches twenty-three years of messages, which is the most emotional part of the film, and sees Murph, who is now as old as he is, and Tom, who has completely given up on him. This was the winner for me. McConaughey was spectacular and made the whole audience find an emotional connection with Coop that they didn't know they had. So within the connection with Murph, Tom, and Coop; we all squeezed ourselves into the middle and saw the movie in a whole different way. This character made this whole movie WAY more than just a space movie.
Both Dr. Brands (Michael Caine) (Anne Hathaway) did very well. In every moment in the movie, Hathaway made it real. She acted with enough emotion that you could really believe that they filmed them in these actual situations. Michael Caine always does a great job, and in this movie he did nothing less.
Dr. Mann (Matt Damon) was a great antagonist. He seemed so desperate that you could almost feel bad for him. Except at the end when he tries to kill Coop and leaves them stranded there until THE EPIC DOCKING SCENE! You could see where he was coming from and see why he was doing what he was doing, but I still didn't feel bad when he failed to dock the ship. There are many things to discuss on this movie, and I left a lot out. But we all have our opinions, and you know how you feel about the pieces I left out. So I leave Interstellar with an (drum roll)
